Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese spiritual healing practice, offered through light touch, that promotes balance of body, mind and spirit.  Reiki practitioners act as a conduit, providing the means for Reiki energy to flow to the recipient.   Similar to how acupuncture stimulates the flow of chi in our bodies to maintain health, the practice of Reiki offers healing energy itself to a receptive person.  Reiki is being used today in hospitals all over the world to support health and wellness.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?
During a reiki treatment, you will lay fully clothed on a massage table, listening to soothing music.  The Reiki practitioner will lay their hands on or slightly over your body in a series of hand positions in order to offer Reiki energy.  General hand positions will address all your chakras as well as your major muscles, joints, hands and feet.  Special attention is given to those areas of concern mentioned in your intake form.  At all times, practitioners practice safe touch, which means no touching of breasts, genitals or buttocks (they may work above the body to attend to these areas, if necessary.  For example:  offering energy to breast cancer patients).  One on one sessions take approximately one hour.

What does Reiki feel like?
Reiki feels warm and profoundly relaxing.  You will probably feel the practitioners hands get very hot, and at some point notice that you have become deeply relaxed, with a sense of total well-being.  Some people feel tingling or energy movement through the body while receiving Reiki, and some also experience seeing colors, or entering a light sleep or trance state, like a waking dream – some feel nothing at all.  Be assured, Reiki healing energy helps us regain robust health whether or not we feel it working.  Reiki induces a powerful relaxation response, which allows us to heal more quickly on physical, mental, and emotional levels.

What are the benefits of several sessions?
Just like meditation, or movement arts, the effects of Reiki are cumulative.  While one session can work wonders, repeated, regular Reiki treatments can change your life in positive ways.  As an example:  if you sit in meditation once for ten minutes, you will receive benefit.  If you sit in meditation every day for a month, many propose that your life will begin to change profoundly.  Reiki works similarly – regular sessions are supportive of our well-being in every way.

Can Reiki “cure” me?
Reiki is a complementary methodology of energy healing that works with and supports all other wellness treatments.   Often, although we may look for a “quick fix,” we learn that healing is more about gentle shifts in awareness, releasing emotional patterns, new understandings, and daily practice than a “miracle cure.”  Reiki is not a “magic bullet” or an immediate “cure” for any ailment, and never replaces licensed medical treatment, but is instead a powerful way to support wellness for the physical, mental and emotional bodies.

What are my responsibilities as a client?
